چکیده

We have previously reported on a software system called Bess which simulates the action of biodegradation pathways on compounds. It does so by encoding biodegradation pathways in a knowledge base and applying those pathways in sequence to the compound, breaking it down into metabolites. We describe Bess, its knowledge-base and the system that uses it, and some preliminary validation results. We also report on some modiications made to Bess to improve its performance and on investigation into how genetic algorithm learning can be used to discover new biodegradation knowledge.

Comparison of diethylene glycol and phenol biodegradability by different test methods.

Biodegradation is generally recognised as an important removal mechanism for pollutants in natural ecosystems. It determines the concentration of substances in the environment. According to the legislation of the European Union, there are three levels for biodegradability testing protocols for chemicals which cover different test conditions. This paper describes one such multilevel approach to ...

Influence of Glycerol and Clay Contents on Biodegradability of Corn Starch Nanocomposites

In this study, biodegradation of corn starch/glycerol/Na-MMT nanocomposites by soil burial tests were carried out for up to 6 months. Films were prepared by casting method according to central composite design and response surface methodology was applied for analysis of the results. The effects of formulation on the water solubility, contact angle and tensile strength of starch films were inves...

Anaerobic Biodegradation of Surfactants – Scientific Review

The anaerobic biodegradation of surfactants is used as an acceptability criterion in some environmental pieces of legislation (eco-label, risk assessment, etc.), without a proper evaluation of the relevance of such a characteristic. Available screening test methods to assess the anaerobic biodegradation do not simulate the real conditions prevailing in these anaerobic compartments but rather re...

Biodegradability of Plastics

Plastic is a broad name given to different polymers with high molecular weight, which can be degraded by various processes. However, considering their abundance in the environment and their specificity in attacking plastics, biodegradation of plastics by microorganisms and enzymes seems to be the most effective process. When plastics are used as substrates for microorganisms, evaluation of thei...

Biochemical interpretation of quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) for biodegradation of N-heterocycles: a complementary approach to predict biodegradability.

Prediction of the biodegradability of organic compounds is an ecologically desirable and economically feasible tool for estimating the environmental fate of chemicals. We combined quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) with the systematic collection of biochemical knowledge to establish rules for the prediction of aerobic biodegradation of N-heterocycles. Validated biodegradation ...
